In Jan. 2011, the Chicago Board of Education voted to bring its Breakfast in the Classroom program to all elementary schools in the district. This decision builds on years of success in elementary schools across Chicago and mirrors a national movement to ensure that all children start the day with a healthy meal.
Parents and advocates from communities around the city are speaking up in support of the program, and others are raising questions about its value. Some of these questions point to real challenges in implementing a city-wide program; others reflect missing or inaccurate information.
Healthy Schools Campaign has created Breakfast Matters to answer questions about breakfast in the classroom, assemble facts about the food and how the program is really being put in practice across the city and, perhaps most important, share the stories of the principals, teachers and parents who see the initiative in action every day.
